Kolkata Derby -- The Unsung Clash of the Titans in Cricket Nation, is a recognition of branding — notably of football, in a nation synonymous with Cricket — hence the tag Cricket Nation.

But first things first. I am an academic and commentator on football, power, and global influence, with a focus on Africa and the Middle East. My works look beyond the pitch to examine how sport shapes national image, nation branding, public communication, and international ambition. I have written widely on football governance, league branding, and the often-overlooked officials and decision-makers who keep the game running. My writings also explore how countries -- particularly in the Gulf -- use football and major sporting investments as tools of soft power and global visibility. These insights have featured in academic, policy, and public forums, where they bring clarity to complex debates around sport, development, and reputation. Through an accessible and critical lens, I have been able to present football not just as entertainment, but as a window into geopolitics, business and society.

I recently wrote about the “Kolkata Derby” where I pointed out that “Reigning champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant, on the heels of their back-to-back titles, are set to host Kerala Blasters in the opening fixture at home.” That much-anticipated “Kolkata derby” has been scheduled for May 3 — I’ll be paying attention to detail.
